But I most certainly do I don’t relish hearing myself talking like I’m retarded a semi-illiterate nincompoop. Children don’t have this problem, or confident people, who just push on through. Teachers and linguists perennially say that a key problem adults have when learning a new language is self-consciousness, a fear of the blunders. My teachers are used to such mangling and don’t even bat an eyelid, but staff in bars and restaurants in touristy areas, who inevitably have better English than my Italian, do tend to flinch and wince, giving a good idea of my standard Much work and someday you talk pretty.” (Hence the title of the book.) I’m aware that much of my Italian probably sounds like this. I particularly love the way he renders bad student French in English – “That be common for I, also, but be more strong, you. Several of them are concerned Sedaris’ move to France and his efforts to learn French. Been reading David Sedaris’s ‘Me Talk Pretty One Day’ (thanks Marta!), an astute, highly entertaining collection of essays/autobiographical short stories.

In devastatingly beautiful prose, she reveals unforgettable characters capable of unspeakable cruelty - and deep unspoken love. Margo Lanagan has written an extraordinary tale of desire, despair and transformation. And in the end the witch will always have her payment. But from his first look into those wide, questioning, liquid eyes, he will be just as transformed as she is. A fisherman may have and hold a sea bride, and tell himself that he is her master. Down on the windswept beach, where the seals lie in herds, the outcast sea witch Misskaella casts her spells - and brings forth girls from the sea - girls with long, pale limbs and faces of haunting innocence and loveliness - the most enchantingly lovely girls the fishermen of Rollrock have ever seen. But Rollrock is also a place of magic - the scary, salty-real sort of magic that changes lives forever. Life is hard for the families who must wring a poor living from the stormy seas. Product Description Rollrock island is a lonely rock of gulls and waves, blunt fishermen and their homely wives. Book Description A mesmerizing tale of sea magic from the author of Tender Morsels. Congress actually had an effective solution to the problem and still the president said no. In February 1887, Democratic president Grover Cleveland vetoed legislation that would have appropriated money to provide seeds to several drought-stricken counties of Texas. He relates a terrific episode of a president distinguishing between the type of disaster or crisis that should be viewed as a public concern and one that is not. Limits to government involvement in the everyday lives of citizens may seem like a quaint notion at present, but Troy provides us with important historical context. “The more that the federal government takes on,” Troy notes, “the less capable it appears to be at handling its core functions.” Four million people now work for the federal government, and its sheer size may be rendering it incompetent. As much as he agrees there are more effective and less effective ways of responding to trouble, Troy wants readers to be clear about the limits of presidential and government action. A plan he helped craft for the Bush administration worked well in response to the swine-flu outbreak that threatened Americans just months after Barack Obama had assumed office. Needs to hold the government accountable for maintaining a robust toolkit of available countermeasures to deal with a variety of possible emergencies . . . . The president should also oversee the development of federal government plans to use those tools and have his team practice those plans so that they can be deployed effectively. I rooted for these characters and found myself hoping they would find a happy ending to their journey.Īs the 5th book in the Greene series, Fisher and Allie are surrounded by a large secondary cast. The way Allie’s character evolved seemed more organic and realistic to me. As Fisher and Allie dealt with their “surprise” he said and did all the “right” things, but his evolution to get there seemed to be condensed into several conversations. This was a well written and entertaining read, but I have to admit that some of the character and emotional development seemed to skim the surface. This time we see Fisher (the sheriff) in the starring role with Allie (a Bailey series secondary/crossover character). My Unexpected Surprise is a solid entry into the Greene family series. I just loved everything about this book, I already feel like going back and reading it all again! I recommend this one. The novel follows a large cast of characters and goes back and forth between 1994 and the present day, and we get the backgrounds of the main characters. Now the detective from the 1994 murders is on the brink of retirement but can’t bear that he might have missed something so he goes back through the case to see if they did miss anything. Only now 20 years later a journalist, Stephanie Mailer, has turned up and is certain that the cops missed something obvious at the crime scene. Back in 1994 four brutal murders happened, and the case was solved by a cop duo who have a 100% success rate. It’s quite a long book and I read it in just two sittings as I just didn’t ever want to put it down, I wanted to know what was going on in this small town. I read and adored The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair when it was published so I had very high hopes for his new one and I’m so happy to say that the novel lived up to them.
